The diamond wire saw is one of the most widely used devices for cutting industrial materials. Practical and efficient, it can cut materials of any kind and hardness. In this article, we dive into the world of these devices which shine by their performance and their robustness. Discover how these essential tools work for professionals.

What is a diamond wire saw?

A diamond wire saw is a motorized device equipped with a cable impregnated with diamond beads. Very popular in industry and civil engineering, it is used for precision cutting, regardless of the nature of the material. Indeed, it is a very versatile tool. It is used for cutting metals (copper masses, ingots, steel, platinum…), reinforced concrete, paving stones and bricks, rocks…

Why is it better than the others?

The success of the diamond wire saw is mainly due to its ability to produce high precision parts. Unlike other types of saws, it does not generate dust or debris. Its operating principle is based exclusively on the hardness of the diamond. Therefore, it does not generate any vibration that could destabilize the structure of the material being sawn. The resulting surface is smooth and free of any debris. In addition, the technology used allows the wire to resist the compression forces during the friction, since it performs a circular movement on all sides. This is why this type of saw works perfectly in tight environments.

The diamond wire saw is also ahead of the curve when it comes to safety. To address the problem of wires breaking during cutting, its designers opted for sintering, a process that strengthens the structure of metal elements. The objective is to make each cable harder and therefore more resistant. And to avoid possible projections in case of breakage, it is possible to use crimped diamond beads.

How does this type of device work?

The diamond wire saw is powered by a drive motor, which pulls the diamond wire during the cutting process. To allow the diamond wire to come into action, the material being cut is pierced from top to bottom. Then a series of pulleys insert the wire into the resulting hole, and the drive motor takes over. It generates a rotational movement of the wire, which is the source of the friction force used by the diamond balls to cut the material.

The device is equipped with lances that bring fluids (water or lubricants) to the cutting area to moisten and clean the wire during the operation. This limits wear and tear on the equipment, while optimizing the quality of the results obtained.

What are the criteria to consider when choosing a good diamond saw?

To obtain quality cuts, you need an efficient saw. To help you in your choice, we have selected some criteria that will allow you to choose an efficient device:

  • The power of the motor and the feed speed of the saw
  • The robustness of the saw
  • The versatility of the device
  • The pressure developed on the surface to be cut
  • The capacity of the saw (size of the objects it is able to cut)
  • The material of the saw wire, its length and the resulting precision
